Analysis of Nonlinear Oscillations Triggered by the Reactive Power Deadband Control of SVG

This paper investigates the nonlinear oscillations triggered by the reactive power deadband control of Static Var Generators in power systems. With the increasing integration of renewable energy, oscillations caused by nonlinear components in power electronic devices have become a critical concern. Focusing on SVG deadband control strategies, the study analyzes how improper deadband parameter settings can lead to self-excited oscillations due to repeated entry and exit from the deadband. The dynamic behavior of SVGs under different initial conditions is explored, revealing that weak grid conditions or inappropriate deadband exit criteria may destabilize the system. A simplified single-line network model is used to derive the relationship between reactive power and terminal voltage, illustrating the oscillation mechanism. The paper proposes guidelines for deadband parameter settings to avoid oscillations and validates the findings through simulations. This work highlights the necessity of carefully designing deadband control strategies to ensure stable SVG operation in renewable power systems.
