Research on the evaluation method of AIS base station reception performance

This study aims to accurately assess the reception range of AIS base stations. Methodologically, ship information from a specified base station within continuous time periods was extracted from existing navigation databases, covering multiple fields including nine-digit ship identification codes. After data cleaning, standard variation ranges for Speed Over Ground (SOG) and Course Over Ground (COG) rates were empirically established to exclude outliers. In ship trajectory extraction, a 30-minute time threshold (T) was set. Ship trajectories were grouped and sorted by identification codes, with complete trajectories determined by time intervals and data point quantities, defining breakpoints. For reception range evaluation, distances between breakpoints and the base station were calculated. Weighted average distances of breakpoints were computed for ships with multiple trajectory segments, and probability density curves of all ships' weighted average distances were plotted. Key results indicate that the peak area of the probability density curve represents the primary reception range, while the attenuation section helps evaluate boundary limits. The conclusion demonstrates that this method effectively determines AIS base station reception ranges, providing reliable technical support and decision-making basis for base station optimization and maritime traffic management.
