Transforming Energy and Transportation: A Roadmap to Decarbonization
Electric vehicles (EVs) offer a promising solution to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the environmental footprint of transportation compared to conventional gasoline-powered vehicles. Although electric vehicles produce zero emissions during operation, their manufacturing phase, especially that of high capacity batteries, entails significant carbon dioxide (CO<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>) emissions because of energy-intensive processes where materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel are extracted. This paper examines the life cycle of CO<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> emissions associated with EVs, highlighting the complexities of raw material extraction and the environmental and social implications therein. Despite these upfront emissions, EVs demonstrate a clear advantage over gasoline vehicles in terms of overall lifetime emissions, particularly as global electricity grids transition to renewable energy sources. Future projections suggest further reductions in operational emissions, positioning EVs as a pivotal component in sustainable transportation systems. The study underscores the importance of holistic approaches in evaluating the environmental impact of EVs and advocates for continued advancements in technology and energy infrastructure to enhance their sustainability.
