Voltage Regulation in Distribution Network with Voltage Dependent Loads using Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System

Voltage regulation is crucial for power distribution networks to continue providing end consumers with steady and uninterruptible electrical service. Integrating renewable energy resources(RES), such as solar photovoltaic(PV) and wind turbines, into the distribution system has become crucial to modern power systems. The constraints presented by growing demand, the unpredictability of RES, and the integration of dispersed energy resources are difficult to handle with traditional voltage regulation techniques. This study investigates the usage of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in combination with a photovoltaic (PV) generating system to improve voltage management in a distribution system with voltage-dependent loads. IEEE 33bus distribution network, including BESS and PV systems, is modeled using MATPOWER, a powerful tool to simulate power system operations. The simulation results show that problems with voltage control in modern distribution systems can be successfully addressed by combining BESS with PV, improving the sustainability and resilience of the system.
