Comparative Evaluation of Fracture Resistance in Teeth Restored with E-glass Fiber-reinforced Composite in Mesio-occluso-distal Cavities: An In Vitro Study

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the fracture resistance of teeth with mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) cavities restored using resin composite with and without E-glass fibers. Materials and methods: Thirty freshly extracted human premolar teeth were selected for the study and mounted in self-cure acrylic resin. The teeth were divided into three groups: group A (intact teeth as control group), group B (restored with E-glass fibers and composite), and group C (restored with composite alone). Standardized MOD cavities were prepared for groups B and C. The cavities were restored as per the assigned group. After restoration, finishing and polishing were performed for both groups. All samples were incubated at 37°C in 100% humidity for 24 hours, followed by thermocycling. The samples were then subjected to fracture resistance testing using a universal testing machine. The statistical analysis was done using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc Tukey’s test. Results: E-glass fiber-reinforced composite significantly (p = 0.001) increased fracture resistance as compared to composite resin restorations alone. The highest fracture resistance was shown by group A (1088.9 ± 90.545 N), followed by group B (835.4 ± 68.628 N), and the least values were seen in case of group C (525.9 ± 87.347 N). Intergroup comparison showed significant differences between all groups (p = 0.001). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, the results showed that E-glass fiber group exhibited greater fracture resistance when used in combination with the resin composite restorative material to restore the MOD cavities in premolars, although it was not able to restore the strength similar to the intact tooth.
