Quality of YouTube™ Videos on Anterior Incisor-proximal Composite Restoration: A Content Quality Analysis

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the content quality of YouTube™ videos on anterior incisal-proximal composite restoration, an essential clinical skill in dentistry. Materials and methods: A systematic search on YouTube™ from year 2023 to 2024 was conducted using specific keywords, yielding 48 videos, of which 39 were eligible for analysis. Video characteristics, such as source, type, and content, were extracted and evaluated using a gold standard checklist and a customized usefulness scoring scheme (USS). Chi-squared test was used to analyze the association between the type of teeth used and type of video channel with USS. Kruskal–Wallis test was utilized to assess the difference between various groups of USS and the number of likes, views, comments, and likes-to-views ratio. Results: The results showed that only five videos (13%) met the excellent quality criteria, while 14 videos (36%) were of poor quality. The number of views (<i>p</i> = 0.019) and likes-to-views ratio (<i>p</i> = 0.014) were significantly associated with the video quality. Dental educational channels were more likely to produce high-quality videos than product-based channels. Conclusion: The quality of YouTube™ videos on anterior incisal-proximal composite restoration varies significantly, with a majority of videos being of poor or moderate quality. Dental educators and students should practice caution when using YouTube™ as a learning resource and prioritize high-quality videos that provide accurate and reliable information.
