Sustainable Conservation and Development of Shanxi Merchants' Traditional Residences: A Case Study of Taigu Ancient City, China

This study explores the sustainable conservation and development of traditional Shanxi merchant residences in Taigu Ancient City, China. It addresses challenges posed by rapid urbanization, including the deterioration of historical dwellings, lack of public awareness, and insufficient funding for heritage protection. Three primary objectives are established: to examine the spatial characteristics of these residences, to identify key obstacles in the conservation process, and to propose conservation and adaptive reuse strategies aligned with principles of sustainability. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative approach that integrates field investigation, document analysis, and case studies. The findings indicate that combining spatial analysis with community participation and context-sensitive restoration strategies can significantly enhance the effectiveness of heritage conservation. This study offers a strategic framework for balancing the authenticity of cultural heritage with contemporary functional demands.
