Beyond Biofortification: Rethinking Iron Nutrition in Crops Through Phosphorus‐Limited Adaptation
Summary statement This paper highlights how adapting common bean to low‐phosphorus soils naturally reduces seed phytic acid, significantly improves iron bioavailability without the yield penalties observed in conventional low‐phytate mutants. This stress‐adapted approach achieves near‐optimal iron absorption ratios. It maintains yields under nutrient‐poor conditions, offering a climate‐resilient, sustainable strategy to combat “hidden hunger” by aligning improved crop nutrition with real‐world agricultural challenges.
