Agroforestry Backyards in the Quilombola Territory of Tipitinga, Santa Luzia do Pará: Spaces for Strengthening the Local Socioeconomy

Introduction: The inclusion of traditional peoples has enabled the study of the economic, social, and cultural importance of quilombola communities and their agroforestry backyards. Objective: This study analyzes the importance and uses of agroforestry backyards in the Tipitinga quilombola territory, in Santa Luzia do Pará, Pará. Method: The qualitative research involved 18 of the 28 families in the territory (64% of the population). Semi-structured interviews and field visits were conducted. It was found that more than 50% of the families have resided in the territory for more than 20 years, demonstrating stability and maturity in their claim to quilombola identity. Results and Discussion: Agroforestry backyards are vital for food security and income generation, representing a relevant production system that strengthens socioeconomic dynamics and preserves the traditional way of life and the sustainable use of natural resources. However, data analysis reveals a lack of technical knowledge to increase the productivity of these gardens, highlighting the need to strengthen government technical assistance and academic outreach strategies. Research Implications: Agroforestry gardens are spaces for well-being that integrate food cultivation, environmental preservation, and quality of life, providing sustenance, food security, and a harmonious and sustainable environment. Originality/Value: Data analysis reveals a lack of technical knowledge to increase the productivity of these gardens, highlighting the need to strengthen government technical assistance and academic outreach strategies.
