Evaluation of the Implementation and Improvement Plan for Energy & Pollution Control at PT Borneo Indobara's (BIB) Bunati Port to Support ESG Improvements

The coal mining industry from mining to shipping is increasingly a cause for concern due to its significant environmental impact, particularly in terms of energy consumption and emissions. PT Borneo Indobara one of Indonesia's coal producers, operates a crusher plant facility at Bunati port. This facility plays an important role in the coal handling process before coal is sent to consumers. However, operational activities that still rely on heavy equipment and use diesel fuel have a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency. The issue of energy and emissions is being addressed at national and global levels in order to improve performance, and this has prompted the company to take strategic steps to reduce its energy intensity and environmental impact with the aim of lowering its current high-risk ESG rating. Bunati's 2017 to 2024 crusher plant has changed significantly from design to operation. In 2017 all operations were conventional and relied heavily on heavy equipment. By 2024 the heavy equipment will have been greatly reduced from the previous year. Some of the key initiatives that have been undertaken by the company are the reorganization of the coal unloading system and crusher and the transfer of energy sources from diesel generators to PLN electricity. Since 2017 and the following year, operations have gradually become more efficient. This can be seen from the decreasing number of heavy equipment in the bunati crusher plant amidst the increasing production. The study focuses on measuring the extent to which the changes that have been made have succeeded in reducing energy consumption per ton of coal (energy intensity) while reducing greenhouse gas emissions per ton of coal (emission intensity). While the measures have shown a positive impact in terms of heavy equipments reduction, there has been no data driven comprehensive evaluation of their effectiveness as well as their business impact. Improvement opportunities based on data operational effectiveness will provide valid recommendations that are highly likely to be implemented. that improvements will contribute to reducing and maintaining emission levels amidst high production demands and will also improve the ESG rating from highrisk to better.
