Translator’s Subjectivity under the Constraints of Norms—A Case Study of the French Translation of Zhalie Zhi

Zhalie Zhi, a novel by the renowned contemporary Chinese writer Yan Lianke, is one of his representative works and a prime example of his self-created writing style “mythorealism”. The book has also achieved considerable success in its translation and reception in France, garnering enthusiastic responses from French media and readers alike, which owes much to the efforts of translation. This study, based on Gideon Toury’s Translation Norms Theory, analyzes how the translator exercised subjectivity under normative constraints in the French version of Zhalie Zhi, exploring the reasons behind its successful translation and reception. The aim is to enrich research on the French translation of Zhalie Zhi and provide insights for the translation of Chinese literature.
