Sergey I. Rudenko’s mordovian and mari museum collections

The outstanding ethnographer Sergey Ivanovich Rudenko made a huge contribution to the collection of museum objects on the traditional culture of the Mari and Mordvins-Erzyas. His collections on these peoples were based on items of clothing (hats, women’s and men’s shirts, caftans, aprons, belts, shoes, etc.), fabric samples, jewelry, musical instruments, household utensils. All the items were got for the Ethnographic Department of the Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III (now the Russian Ethnographic Museum) in 1907 and 1912 in Bugulminsky and Buguruslansky districts of Samara, Orsky district of Orenburg, Belebeyevsky, Birsky and Sterlitamak districts of Ufa and Krasnoufimsky district of Perm provinces. According to experts, some of the items collected in villages Yuva and Verkhny Bugalysh of Krasnoufimsk uyezd recorded as Mari are actually Udmurt. Many of them are the works of folk decorative and applied art (patterned weaving and embroidery). Objects of worship such as tombstone sculptures of cuckoos are of great value among the Mari people. These artifacts document in detail and vividly illustrate the peculiar traditional culture of the Trans-Volga Mordvins-Erzya and eastern (Pribel and Ural (Krasnoufim)) The Mari people are the basis of the museum’s exhibitions and expositions on these peoples. S.I. Rudenko’s photographic collections on the Mari people which are also kept in the Russian Ethnographic Museum (REM), are of great scientific importance. The scientist’s photographs depict the process of summer public prayer-sacrifices of the Mari people of the Birsky district of the Ufa province. The history of collection and materials of the Mordovian and Mari collections of S.I. Rudenko’s REM was studied in detail by E.V. Kolchina, L.M. Loiko, A.A. Pesetskaya, and others.
