Flexible Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Thermoplastic Forehead Rest: Estimation of Cervical-Spine Assistance in a Forward-Leaning Posture
This study estimated the effects of a flexible, carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic forehead-rest (FHR) device, designed to reduce physical-discomfort-causing cervical load in forward-leaning postures (FLPs). Traditional devices based on posture-correction methods often restrict the movement of device users, negatively affecting their work performance. In contrast, the FHR adapts to forward leaning and supports the head by a restorative force, thereby alleviating the cervical load. The effectiveness of the FHR was evaluated by measuring the supporting force using force sensors and calculating the angles through image processing to extract the marker coordinates. The results indicate that the FHR reduces cervical compression by more than 30% and the forces on the neck muscles required to support the head by over 55%. These findings were further validated using electromyograms, confirming the device effectiveness. Future improvements, such as structural analysis and material optimization, are expected to enhance the FHR functionality and comfort. This study provides a foundation for reducing physical strain during tasks requiring FLPs and offers a solution that maintains flexibility while improving neck support. These findings suggest that this innovative approach could significantly benefit workers in jobs that require extended periods of forward leaning.
