The integrated care of the patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and osteoporosis

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and osteoporosis are two frequently associated chronic conditions, especially in elderly patients, and share common risk factors such as advanced age, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, and corticosteroid use. The cumulative impact of these diseases on the quality of life justifies the need for an integrated medical approach. The integrated consultation provides an optimal framework for the evaluation and simultaneous management of both conditions in family medicine. It includes clinically guided anamnesis, targeted physical examination, specific investigations (spirometry, DEXA), the development of a joint therapeutic plan, and personalized counseling. Through coordinated interventions, the family physician contributes to reducing the risk of exacerbations and fractures, improving treatment adherence, preventing long-term complications, and enhancing the patient’s quality of life. The integrated consultation thus represents an effective model of patient-centered care that highlights the complex and ongoing role of the family physician in chronic disease management.
