Vaccination in chronic pulmonary and cardiovascular disease

This article aims to present the importance, the benefits and the recommendations of the most important scientific societies regarding the vaccination of people with chronic lung and cardiovascular diseases. The National Adult Immunization Program has been in existence in Romania for about one year. Until the end of 2023, adults did not benefit from any compensated vaccines (except for flu vaccine), but since the last year, patients with different chronic diseases can be offered free vaccines depending on their pathology. Cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases have an increased incidence among Romanian patients, being a leading cause of morbidity and mortality both nationally and worldwide, which should alarm doctors who are involved in the management of these diseases and should make them more aggressive in terms of prophylaxis and reducing the risk factors, that could be avoided. The solution for these patients is vaccination, both pneumococcal and against influenza, and to a large extent this is the responsibility of the family doctor, who is the primary vaccinator. Correctly administered vaccination, depending on age and comorbidities, can save lives.
