Global impact of pneumococcal vaccination: clinical benefits and public health implications
Pneumococcal disease remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly among children under 5 years old, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Over the past two decades, the introduction and expansion of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) have significantly altered the epidemiological landscape of Streptococcus pneumoniae infections. This review synthesizes global data on the clinical efficacy, immunological mechanisms, indirect benefits, and long-term public health outcomes of pneumococcal vaccination. Furthermore, it explores the challenges in vaccine implementation across diverse healthcare settings and proposes strategic approaches to enhance vaccine uptake. Emphasis is placed on the pivotal role of PCVs in reducing invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), noninvasive respiratory infections, and antimicrobial resistance. The review also discusses recent advancements in vaccine formulation and coverage, providing a comprehensive insight into the global health gains afforded by sustained pneumococcal immunization programs.
