Performance and environmental impact analysis of alkali activated slag and OPC concretes with polypropylene fiber in sustainable construction

Apart from its major contribution to the generation of greenhouse gases and environmental degradation, the building industry consumes a lot of natural resources and energy. Concrete largely made of cement, should be given great importance in the study of sustainability since its main binding component. This work aims to study, using four different mixes, the mechanical, microstructural, and environmental performance of M20 grade concrete. Conventional concrete (CC); conventional concrete with polypropylene fibre (CCPF); alkali activated slag concrete (SC); and alkali activated slag concrete with polypropylene fibre (SCPF). Among the tests performed were microstructural analysis, compressive strength, flexural strength, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Using the SimaPro 9.1 program and the Eco Invent database; the life cycle assessment (LCA) midpoint analysis was conducted to examine the impacts these combinations have on the environment. The results clearly showed that SCPF had better mechanical properties and microstructural performance than CC. Furthermore, although if it had a higher impact than Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) used on its own, the inclusion of alkali-activated slag resulted in a notable improvement in environmental sustainability. Because of its enhanced durability, better mechanical performance, and lower ecological imprint, the findings of this study show the possibilities of SCPF as a material for ecologically conscious building projects including rural rigid pavements.
