Corneal transplantation in the state of Pernambuco: historical aspects, legislation and tissue harvesting

Introduction: Corneal transplantation is a well-established procedure in Brazil, regulated by specific legislation that ensures transparency and safety in the process of tissue collection and distribution, highlighting the importance of the work of health professionals, especially CIHDOTT nurses. Despite advances, challenges such as family refusal and the shortage of donors still impact the availability of corneas, and educational campaigns and the optimization of hospital infrastructure are essential to increase awareness and improve the efficiency of the transplant system. Objective: to analyze the historical evolution of corneal transplantation, the legislation that regulates this procedure in Brazil and the role of the nursing team in the identification, collection and distribution of ocular tissue, highlighting the challenges and strategies to optimize this process. Method: This article addresses cornea harvesting in Pernambuco, highlighting the importance of CIHDOTT in identifying donors and communicating with the State Transplant Center. Nurses play an essential role in the efficiency of the harvesting process. Coordination between professionals and eye banks ensures the preservation and distribution of corneas to patients. Results: Corneal donation in Pernambuco follows a regulated process initiated by CIHDOTT, which screens potential donors in hospitals. After confirming the donor's viability, the Bed Center coordinates the collection and serological screening, while the Eye Bank collects and preserves the corneas. The process, which involves several professionals and safety protocols, aims to ensure ethical and efficient donation, reducing the waiting list for transplants and restoring patients' vision.
