Integrating BIM Education with University Social Responsibility: A Course Implementation Approach
Historical buildings reflect the evolution of a region's living environment, engineering techniques, materials, craftsmanship, and culture. These buildings are not only a part of heritage but also offer significant cultural, economic, and educational value to modern society. Digitizing historical buildings through 3D building components and recording related maintenance information, materials, and craftsmanship allows for more effective preservation of their historical significance. This study focuses on digitizing the historical buildings of Shenkeng Old Street, New Taipei City, Taiwan, through a building information modeling (BIM) course. By engaging in the modeling process, students can better understand the historical context and architectural features of Shenkeng, which helps them appreciate the importance and value of historical heritage. The goals of this study are 1) to develop students' professional skills in BIM and 2) to raise students' awareness of their social responsibilities and foster a sense of civic duty. This effort aims to achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
