Application of polymer-modified oil bitumen for corrosionprotection in oil pipelines
Corrosion protection of oil and gas infrastructure remains one of the most significant challenges in the energy sector, mainly due to the constant degradation of metal pipelines in oil and gas transportation systems. This degradation leads to substantial economic losses, safety concerns, and environmental risks.Traditional anti-corrosion materials, such as glass, epoxy resins, and bitumen coatings, are widely used in the industry. However, these materials often fail to provide adequate adhesion at the metal-adhesive interface, limiting their long-term effectiveness. To address these shortcomings, this study proposes a novel anti-corrosion material of polymer waste combined with Baku 85/25 bitumen, forming a polymer-bitumen composite. The composition was meticulously optimized to improve adhesion between the coating and the metal surface, ensuring that the protection remains durable over time.Key findings suggest that the ideal thickness for the insulation layer of the pipeline should be between 0.1-0.3mm for exposed pipelines and 0.5-0.6 mm for underground pipelines. The material was tested under various environmental conditions, and the results confirmed its capacity to protect pipelines from corrosion for more than 50 years. This polymer-bitumen composite not only demonstrated excellent corrosion resistance but also proved highly effective in enhancing the longevity and durability of pipelines, reducing the need for frequent maintenance. The study highlights the potential of polymer-modified bitumen as a sustainable and cost-effective solution for pipeline protection. The results show superior corrosion resistance compared to conventional materials and offer promising prospects for developing long-lasting, eco-friendly materials tailored for the harsh conditions of oil and gas transportation systems
