The role of oxidative stress and inflammation in diabetes induced liver injury: A systematic review

Diabetes mellitus is one of the worst endocrinological diseases that can threaten health in the world. Hyperglycemia is one of the most prominent symptoms, and it is known that it can trigger inflammatory reactions and oxidative stress, which can cause liver damage. Many mechanisms of inflammation and oxidative stress play essential roles in liver damage due to diabetes. This research aims to study Diabetes-induced Liver Damage: The Role of Oxidative Stress and Inflammation, which is reviewed in the form of a systematic review. This research is qualitative research with a systematic review methodology approach. Researchers obtained sources taken from electronic search engines via Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus using the keywords "role of oxidative stress in diabetic hepatic injury," "role of inflammation in diabetic hepatic injury," and "inflammation and oxidative stress with diabetic hepatic injury." Data were extracted and synthesized from several research articles according to the inclusion criteria, including all data or articles discussing the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in diabetic hepatic injury and all data based on the presence or absence of clinical validation published from 2020–2024.This research was based on the flow of writing systematic reviews using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We obtained 8 research articles that were relevant in reporting the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in diabetic liver injury. In conclusion, diabetic conditions can increase oxidant production and decrease antioxidant activity. An imbalance between prooxidants and antioxidants will cause oxidative stress conditions. Apart from that, this oxidative stress condition can cause inflammatory reactions and lead to liver injury.
