Dreaming through Marg
abstract: In 1946, the arts and culture journal Marg was founded under the leadership of the writer Mulk Raj Anand (1905–2004). Dedicated to the promotion of the arts and particularly modern architecture in its early years, Marg resignified India as the site of a new modernity, achievable through architectural and industrial development. Furthermore, through its editorial and advertisement archive it linked new conceptions of private consumption and individual taste to the emergent middle class to which the journal appealed. This studies the cultural encoding of early issues of Marg , and historicizes a key moment in the signification of planning and national development as a bourgeois aesthetic experience in early mid-century India.
