Minireview on Offshore Operations and Technologies That Supported the Offshore Production Tests of Gas Hydrates and Interaction with Science
The technological development of naturally occurring gas hydrates and related scientific research require safe and efficient field operations carried out by engineers. Scientific knowledge obtained in this field has been useful to operational personnel. This study introduces several aspects of offshore operations for gas hydrate research and their relationship to research and development. Geological and geophysical site characterization data such as hydraulic, thermal, and mechanical properties of the hydrate-bearing sediments were used to conduct theoretical and modeling studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of depressurization as a technology for producing gas hydrates. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the technologies that are used to obtain the necessary data safely and effectively. The unique nature of gas hydrates, such as their phase changes, necessitates the development of new technologies for sampling and data acquisition and analysis. Implementing these new technologies requires trained operational personnel. Production techniques often encounter obstacles due to the complex behavior of fluid flow, and the dynamic responses of gas hydrate-bearing formations, such as sand production, and the scientific data obtained are used to address these challenges and to support operational personnel. This minireview focuses on the operations of the offshore gas hydrate production tests that were necessary to obtain scientific knowledge and feedback from research.
