Alternative and complementary therapeutic options for post-partum conditions in cows

The main goal of the treatments protocols used for post-partum uterine diseases in cows is to reach as quickly as possible clinical cure while minimize milk and meat residue. The usual treatment approach for these condition is systemic or local antibiotic therapy, to control bacteria growth. Nowadays, in the global context, the use of antibiotic is a serious concern because it is associated with selective pressure on bacteria and with the emergence of resistant bacteria in humans and animals. While the antibiotic therapy remains the most common therapeutic option in the field practice, complementary and alternative veterinary medicine may offer a viable alternative to control the evolution of post-partum uterine diseases in cows, improve the efficiency of general protocols and animal welfare, while the needs for antibiotic utilization decrease.
