Evolving Characteristics and Intensified Influences of Landfalling Tropical Cyclones in East China During 1965–2022
Landfall tropical cyclones cause tremendous hazards in East Asia coastal areas, including East China, an important population and economic center. As such, there is a great urgency for deeper investigations of the landfall tropical cyclone influences in East China. In this study, changes in landfall tropical cyclone activity in East China from 1965–2022 are explored and their influences are estimated. It is demonstrated that the annual TC frequency slightly increased since the mid-1990s and that the influences significantly increased. The changes in landfall tropical cyclone influence are closely associated with the rise in the overland duration. Moreover, the longer sustainment may be attributed to the descending vertical wind shear and ascending low-layer moisture supply over the corresponding areas. In addition, the annual mean genesis location of landfall tropical cyclones has shown a significant westward migration which may be advantageous to the increase in tropical cyclone influences.
