Editor's Note
In the second issue of 2025, Poverty and Public Policy presents original research articles from scholars in South Africa, Australia, Spain and Turkey. The studies show how various factors influence vulnerability in specific contexts, analyzing elements that span healthcare, environmental risks, and demographics. This issue also brings book reviews with perspectives from scholars from Asia, including Indonesia, Hong Kong, and India. The piece “Transcending multidimensional poverty classes in urban developing municipalities” (2025, ADD DOI) by Adrino Mazenda, Catherine Althaus, and Massimiliano Tani uses data from the 2020/21 Quality of Life Survey to run a multinomial logit regression that identified the factors crucial to helping households overcome poverty in urban South Africa. The study finds that improved social support, healthcare access, employment, and transportation are vital for poverty alleviation. The next article is by Auxiliadora González Portillo and Esteban Ruiz-Ballesteros, from Universidad Pablo de Olavide, titled “Rural vulnerabilities in Southern Spain: Beyond material deprivation” (2025, ADD DOI). The researchers opted to adopt a micro-level analysis method, conducting local-level qualitative ethnographic research in Andalusia, Spain. They argue that rural vulnerability is multidimensional and cannot be fully understood or defined solely by material or economic metrics. The article “A Multilevel Analysis of Factors Underlying In-work Poverty: Evidence from Türkiye” (2025, ADD DOI) was written by scholars from Marmara Universitesi, Istanbul, including Gizem Acet Dönmez and Bilge Eriş Dereli. The study applies a multilevel logistic regression analysis using 2022 microdata from the Survey of Income and Living Conditions (SILC) to determine how demographic and regional factors influence in-work poverty. They find components that increase the risk for in-work poverty, including household dependency, being an employee or self-employed, and residing in regions with high inequality. The next piece is by Daniel Nettle, Joe Chrisp, Elliott Aidan Johnson, and Matthew T. Johnson, titled “What do people want from a welfare system? Conjoint survey evidence from UK adults” (2025, ADD DOI). The researchers explore people's preferences for different features of the welfare system in the UK by conducting surveys with 800 adults. Among the findings, they argue that most voters accept higher income taxes for significant poverty reduction. The issue also features a collection of book reviews from authors in Asia, including Hong Kong, India, and Indonesia. Pui Yan Flora Lau reviews Breaking the Poverty Cycle: The Human Basis for Sustainable Development (2010) (2025, ADD DOI). The reviewer recognizes the author's perception of development through individual and psychological empowerment while also expressing a desire for a fuller explanation of how this translates into policy changes. Anik Mustika Rahayu, Dwi Cahyono, and Yunindya Palarani review The Ontology of Well-Being in Social Policy and Welfare Practice (2023) (2025, ADD DOI). The reviewers highlight the author's philosophical and multidisciplinary perception of well-being and, at the same time, note the complexity of this approach. Gopika J. Nair and Srinivas Goli review Appraisal of “Care Poverty” as a Summary Measure of Unmet Needs of Elderly Care (2022) (2025, ADD DOI). They observe the book's measures of care poverty, while pointing out limitations such as a focus on high-income countries for the analysis. Next, A. Muhammad Nurfajrin Nasri reviews Deliberative Democracy, Public Policy, and Local Government (2024) (2025, ADD DOI). The reviewer notes the book's critics on the shortcomings of representative democracy. Ida Bagus Putu Cesario Putra Surayuda and Saifan Nasri review Finance Capitalism and Income Inequality in the Contemporary Global Economy: A Comparative Study of the USA, South Korea, Argentina, and Sweden (2023) (2025, ADD DOI). They observe the book's strength in linking theory and practice, emphasizing the author's argument on the increase of income inequality as a consequence of financialization. Vikky Renaldi, Saefudin Saefudin, Marselino Wau, and Erwinda Sam Anafih review The Poverty Paradox: Understanding Economic Hardship Amid American Prosperity (2023) (2025, ADD DOI). The reviewers acknowledge the author's policy recommendations for poverty alleviation, which target the United States on a structural level. Finally, Fredrik Ludwik Jhon Wanimbo and Erny Riana Wafumilena review Rural Poverty Today: Experiences of Social Exclusion in Rural Britain (2023) (2025, ADD DOI). They recognize how austerity measures deepened vulnerabilities in rural Britain and emphasize the author's argument on how community solidarity cannot replace structural state policy support. We are committed to offering unique perspectives such as these on vulnerability, poverty, and policy topics. We welcome original articles and book review submissions year-round, and look forward to hearing from you. Pui Yan Flora Lau reseña Breaking the Poverty Cycle: The Human Basis for Sustainable Development (2010) (2025, ADD DOI). Anik Mustika Rahayu, Dwi Cahyono y Yunindya Palarani reseñan The Ontology of Well-Being in Social Policy and Welfare Practice (2023) (2025, ADD DOI). A continuación, A. Muhammad Nurfajrin Nasri reseña Deliberative Democracy, Public Policy, and Local Government (2024) (2025, ADD DOI). Ida Bagus Putu Cesario Putra Surayuda y Saifan Nasri reseñan Finance Capitalism and Income Inequality in the Contemporary Global Economy: A Comparative Study of the USA, South Korea, Argentina, and Sweden (2023) (2025, ADD DOI). Finalmente, Fredrik Ludwik Jhon Wanimbo y Erny Riana Wafumilena revisan Rural Poverty Today: Experiences of Social Exclusion in Rural Britain (2023) (2025, ADD DOI). Connie Snyder Mick, Ph.D. Editora en Jefe University of Notre Dame
