MEMÓRIA QUE MOVE: A HISTÓRIA COMO ALICERCE DO TURISMO SUSTENTÁVEL
The appreciation of history in contemporary tourism constitutes a central element for the construction of sustainable and socially responsible practices. By recognizing the past as an essential component of a territory’s cultural identity, tourism is strengthened as a tool for heritage preservation, education, and the valorization of local communities. Memory, in this sense, not only narrates but also structures and guides tourism experiences that seek more than entertainment: they seek meaning. Sustainable tourism, when founded on history, promotes the conservation of tangible and intangible assets, stimulates the local economy in a balanced way, and ensures that cultural narratives are not erased or distorted. Such an approach demands the recognition of historical subjects and respect for the social dynamics of the visited place. In contrast to predatory tourism, which exploits cultural resources in a fleeting and uncommitted manner, the proposal of tourism sustained by memory seeks to establish lasting bonds between visitors and host communities. Thus, history becomes a link between past and present, allowing tourism to function as a means of intergenerational dialogue, identity strengthening, and appreciation of diversity. Memory, far from being a mere archive, becomes movement, awakening critical awareness of experienced spaces and guiding more responsible practices. Tourism that respects history contributes to the preservation of the cultural dignity of peoples and to the construction of a more ethical, reflective, and sustainable experience in territories that become tourist destinations.
