Redefining Beauty in the Digital Age: A Qualitative Study of Modern Self-Presentation and Emerging Norms of Self-Etiquette

This qualitative study examines how individuals are redefining beauty in response to evolving social standards, focusing on contemporary trends in self-presentation and self-etiquette. Using participant observation, focus groups, and in-depth interviews with 42 participants aged 18–45 from diverse cultural and gender backgrounds, the research explores how people engage with self-representation across various media, particularly social platforms. Findings reveal that beauty standards are becoming increasingly flexible, shaped by inclusivity, digital culture, and personal empowerment. Participants report navigating these shifting ideals by carefully curating public personas that balance authenticity with idealization. The study introduces the concept of self-etiquette emerging norms guiding personal presentation in both digital and physical spaces encompassing digital behavior, body positivity, and emotional expression. The results highlight a cultural shift toward personalized, inclusive beauty narratives shaped by diversity, self-expression, and mindfulness in an interconnected world.
