CARAMURUS: REINVENÇÃO DO BRASIL
We propose in this paper a comparative study between Caramuru (1781), an eighteenth-century epopee poem written by Santa Rita Durão, and the movie Caramuru: a invenção do Brasil (2001) made by Guel Arraes and Jorge Furtado. Considering the temporal hiatus that separates both works, this study questions the movie’s degree of fidelity and purpose of adaptation. By highlighting both works’ differences and similarities, we follow another path in adaptation theories, which bypass traditional and hegemonic characterizations that usually guarantee their similarity horizon. Instead, we have leaned on a theoretical contribution that articulates authors such as Elliott (2020), Hutcheon (2013) and Stam (2009). Therefore, we use their adaptation as differential similarity conception to highlight game updates sensed in the socio-historical and cultural fabric of Arraes and Furtado’s movie produced within the context of Brazil’s 500-year discovery celebrations.
