Numerical and experimental analysis of the behaviour of multi-storey flat slab structures following the loss of an edge column

<ns3:p>The objective of this study was to analyse the behaviour of reinforced concrete flat slab structures under an emergency scenario involving the loss of an edge support column. The methodology and findings of experimental tests conducted on a single-storey model are described, along with numerical simulations performed using ATENA Static software for one- , two-, and four-storey buildings. The results of the analyses demonstrated a significant influence of upper storeys on the deformation mechanism and load redistribution within the slab following column failure. In multi-storey buildings, a notable reduction in deflections was observed in comparison to the single-storey structure. Furthermore, the analysis of forces in columns located above the damaged element revealed a change in their nature from compressive to tensile, indicating the activation of a catenary action mechanism that assists in load transfer. The study established the crucial role of adequate peripheral reinforcement in the slab and reinforcement in the columns, enabling their tensile behaviour in an emergency situation</ns3:p>
