Many parents experience a process of grief and loss, also known as living loss, after their child is diagnosed with a mild intellectual disability. This article argues that mental health care professionals should recognize signs of this grieving process and break its taboo. The narrative perspective offers great entry points to reflect with parents on the meaning of the diagnosis and its effects on the family and their environment. The article offers tools for working with families to find a hopeful perspective, such as finding appropriate hope and learning to hold on differently. Jay's family is followed through various stages of this process.
