Planetary Energy Dynamics, Part I: On the Tides

The evidence presented herein points to the sheer implausibility of Newton’s theory of universal gravitational and shows, instead, that Gilbert’s magnetic hypothesis, driven by the mechanics of the geodynamo, explains the numerous anomalous tidal behaviors inexplicable on the basis of gravitational theory. As we will see, a long stream of counterevidence began to emerge in the 19th century which should have alerted scientists to the tenuous nature of Newton’s flawed conception.

Abstract

The evidence presented herein points to the sheer implausibility of Newton’s theory of universal gravitational and shows, instead, that Gilbert’s magnetic hypothesis, driven by the mechanics of the geodynamo, explains the numerous anomalous tidal behaviors inexplicable on the basis of gravitational theory. As we will see, a long stream of counterevidence began to emerge in the 19th century which should have alerted scientists to the tenuous nature of Newton’s flawed conception.
