Fonksiyonel Elektriksel Stimülasyon ve Serebral Palsi’de Kullanımı: Derleme
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) and ıts using in Cerebral Palsy (CP). One of the most common causes of disability in childhood, CP is a non-progressive motor dysfunction that affects muscle tone, posture and movement. One method that is gaining popularity in treating both spasticity and weakness in CP is FES. FES is the stimulation of paralyzed muscles with electric current in order to perform a functional, beneficial movement. Most studies have provided evidence that FES is compatible with everyday life. There are studies showing that FES treatment can increase the walking speed and stride length of children with CP, which in turn can improve the walking of children with CP. FES treatment to the abdominal-back muscles in children with CP reduces cobb and kyphosis angles and increases sitting balance. Cycling training with FES has been reported to provide significant physical benefits, including increased muscle size, decreased spasticity and contractures, and improved neurological and functional performance. The increase in active ankle dorsal flexion in the post-BoNT-A period is greater in the treatment of FES in addition to BoNT-A. This may mean that the two treatments have a reinforcing effect on each other. FES improves upper extremity functions in children with CP. Looking at the literature, we can say that FES treatment is well tolerated by children with CP and makes positive contributions to the rehabilitation program.
