Streptococcus Sore Throat Infection and Risk of Rheumatic Heart Disease

Group A Streptococcus (GAS) pharyngitis is a common condition of childhood, which, unless addressed, may have autoimmune sequela such as acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD). In contemporary practice, which has witnessed the improved treatment with antimicrobial agents RHD is no longer prevented; nevertheless, it remains to be one of the most significant causes of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in conditions of resource deprivation. This study integrates current evidence from epidemiological studies, clinical trials, and public health surveillance. It reviews the pathogenesis, diagnostic methods, prevention strategies, and management options of GAS infections and RHD, with a focus on evidence in high-risk groups. Rapid diagnostic testing and echocardiography, leading to early detection, along with penicillin antibiotic regimens, highly prevent ARF and RHD. Prophylaxis for the long term and school screening programs effectively prevent recurrence. Inequities in access to healthcare and awareness persist as significant barriers. The work is in progress on vaccine development, but has not resulted in a worldwide applicable solution. Prevention of RHD demands an integrated international plan centred around early intervention, health education, and strengthening the healthcare system. Multisectoral action is necessary to decrease the international burden of this avoidable illness.
