Assessment of the Current Status and Future Trends in Telepathology and Digital Pathology in Navi Mumbai Population

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the current adoption and anticipated trends of telepathology (TP) and digital pathology (DP) among histopathologists in Navi Mumbai. Materials and Methods: A self-constructed, 12-item questionnaire was developed in collaboration with five pathology specialists to minimize design ambiguity. The survey was distributed via online feedback to 300 histopathologists across Navi Mumbai. Results: A total of 247 responses were received, yielding a response rate of 81%. Among the respondents, 98% acknowledged the need for implementing TP and DP. Currently, 34% of pathologists utilize digital photomicrographic images in their routine practice. DP was most effectively used in academic institutions, primarily for teaching purposes, as reported by 48% of participants. Additionally, 82% agreed that TP facilitates expert consultation, although only 26% believed it should routinely be used for obtaining a second opinion. In terms of limitations, 67% considered TP to be cost-effective, and 51% anticipated a significant increase in its use over the next five years. Conclusions: The findings indicate a growing acceptance and recognition of the importance of TP and DP among pathologists in Navi Mumbai. Current usage is predominantly in academic settings; however, participants expressed optimism regarding future applications in education, expert consultation, and medico-legal documentation. The study highlights the need for regular training programs and workshops to facilitate widespread adoption and efficient utilization of these technologies.
