A Study on the Meaning of Korean auxiliary verb ‘juda(to give)’

The purpose of this paper is to examine closely the meaning of the Korean auxiliary verb ‘juda(to give)’ in relation to ‘beneficiary’. In the usage of juda, the meaning of ‘beneficiary’ is not fixed to a specific argument or participant, and some sentences in which juda appears do not convey a beneficiary meaning. Even when juda conveys a beneficiary meaning, it may originate either from an intention of beneficence or from a consequential interpretation of benefit. Accordingly, this paper subdivides the beneficiary meaning of juda into [intention], event [effectness], and [positivity], and suggests that these meanings may be either diminished or activated depending on the situation or context. While [intention] and [positivity] may be activated depending on the sentence, [effectness] tends to be consistently maintained across contexts. Next, This paper examines the characteristics and types of 'beneficiary' constructions in which juda is used. In beneficiary constructions with juda, the meaning of ‘beneficiary’ emerges either when there is an intention of beneficence or, even in the absence of [intention], when the construction exhibits [+effectness] and [+positivity].
