Demographics and Distribution of Intra Ocular Lens Power among Patients Undergoing Cataract Surgery in Nepal Police Hospital

Introduction : Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in Nepal as well as in the whole world, but it is curable. During cataract surgery, replacement Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) is inserted. This study analyzes the demographics and distribution of IOL power among the patients undergoing cataract surgery in Nepal Police Hospital. Methods : This study is a retrospective, quantitative study in which previously recorded preoperative biometry data of all patients who underwent cataract surgery in Nepal Police Hospital from January 2022 to March 2025 were included. The variation of IOL power according to gender, age and ethnicity was studied in this study and results were analyzed using SPSS software version 26. Results : The study involved 400 patients where, 255 were males and 145 were females. The mean age was 64.81 ± 10.03 years. The average IOL power was found to be +20.39 ± 1.92 Diopters. The average IOL power varied in males and females and were found to be +19.96 ± 1.80 and +21.15 ± 1.90 Diopters respectively. This showed females had greater IOL power than males. While comparing different ethnic groups Brahmin/ Chhetri community had greater average IOL power which was +20.41 ± 1.85 Diopters. Conclusion : This study concluded that IOL power differs according to age, gender and ethnicity. Also, females have greater IOL power than males. While compared with different ethnic groups, Brahmin/Chhetri community had greater IOL power than others.
