El espejismo de la modernidad: la instrumentalización del estilo arquitectónico Art Déco en el gobierno de Óscar Benavides: los casos del barrio obrero N° 1 y la sede de la prefectura de Lima

We will analyze the political instrumentalization of the Art Deco style in institutional and public architecture, represented by the construction of Barrio Obrero N°1 and the Lima City Hall building as a material and symbolic part of governmental modernization during the mandate of Oscar R. Benavides - a project that had more discursive than concrete overtones - and that was used propagandistically to mark the country’s entry into a supposed modernity, also serving as an alternative to the debate on historicist styles such as Neo-Peruvian and Neo-Hispanic. We use the concept of appropriated modernity as a mirage or false representation of state aspirations that would lead to material progress through industry and the formation of a disciplinary society in the popular sector, resulting in an increase in systems of surveillance, repression, and social coercion. The focus of our research is based on social history, Michel Foucault’s post-structuralist criticism, dependency theory, and cultural history.
