A Study on The Prevalence of Parasitic Mite and Their Seasonal Variation in Apis Mellifera Colonies in Selected Regions of Uttar Pradesh, India

Apiculture plays a significant role in the economy of developing countries like India which is the main subsistence to beekeepers and farmers. Amongst the parasitic infections, mites were found main constraint to bee colonies in general and in particular to Apis mellifera worldwide. This study aimed to check the seasonal dynamics of mite prevalence in Apis mellifera colony in some selected areas of Uttar Pradesh, India. A total of 3389 (Year 1st) and 3723 (Year 2nd) infested and non-infested pupa/beespupa/bees were examined according to standard protocol. The overall study showed that the prevalence was found throughout the year but it varied from season to season. In Year 1st the highest prevalence was observed as 17.48%, 10.80% and 8.59 % in summer, winter and Monsoon respectively. Whereas in the year 2nd, the highest prevalence of infection was observed 15.09%, 11.50% and 11.00% in summer, winter and Monsoon respectively. Statistical analysis also explains the correct interpretation of P<0.05 and shows there was a correlation between different seasons and infection. Thus seasonal variation of parasitic mite  becomes a major issue for the destruction of bee colony and it is necessary to draw out the specific control measure in order to overcome the parasitic infestation.

Abstract
