The Ghosts of Those We Left Behind
Is it always “truth over peace?” When justice seems unattainable, does silence become a form of self-preservation? In this work of philosophical short fiction, Chris and his new girlfriend visit his mother for the first time. She invites them to a family party celebrating his successful cousin Clayton, an invitation that forces him to confront a long-buried trauma: Clayton’s abuse of Chris as a child. Torn between exposing the truth and protecting his ailing mother, who idolizes Clayton and is unaware of his past actions, Chris grapples with the complexities of justice, family loyalty.
