The Contribution of Assistive Technology in the Development of Orientation and Mobility Skills: the Case of Twins with Mild Intellectual Disability and Blindness
Individuals who have both visual impairments and intellectual disabilities encounter distinctive obstacles in orientation and mobility. These challenges arise from the compounded effects of sensory and cognitive impairments, significantly impacting their capacity to navigate and engage with their surroundings. This exacerbates inherent difficulties in areas such as socialization, communication, and activities of daily living. This case study aimed to investigate the role of assistive technology in enhancing spatial skills development in an adult with visual impairment and mild intellectual disability. The study involved two adult twin males and was structured across six stages. Findings demonstrated that the implementation of assistive technology could effectively contribute to the improvement of orientation and mobility skills, thus potentially influencing the outcomes of intervention programs.
