Antibiofilm property of poly(methyl)methacrylate and silver nanocomposite on a mixed population of oral bacteria

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is commonly used as a temporary oral prosthesis material. Recently it has been combined with certain nanoparticles to exhibit promising antibiofilm properties. This work aimed to develop an antibiofilm surface by adding silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to PMMA for dental restoration. AgNPs with an average size of 20 nm were dispersed on the surface of PMMA by the spray deposition method and evaluated with two different concentrations of AgNPs (0.01 and 0.03 % wt). The anti-biofilm effect was studied against a mixed biofilm and observed by confocal microscopy. PMMA showed a greater effect on the inhibition of the biofilm of Actinomyces naeslundii and Streptococcus sanguinis than the control group, with a statistical difference of p = 0.029. The Ag release from nanocomposite was very low (<1 ppb) over time. The nanocomposite presents antibiofilm properties against a mixed biofilm of first colonizers, at concentrations of 0.01 wt% along with the very low release of Ag under dynamic conditions. • The nanocomposite AgNPs@PMMA has shown an enhanced antibiofilm effect with less Ag concentrations of 0.01 %. • AgNPs@PMMA has a very low Ag release during seven days immersed in dynamic conditions (1.060 ppb). • The antimicrobial efficacy of nanocomposite is independent of HGF cell viability without causing any toxicity.
