The Role of Genetic Testing as an Early Detection Method for Breast Cancer in Young Women with a Family History

This literature review explores the role of genetic testing as an early detection method for breast cancer in young women with a family history. Using a qualitative research approach, this study analyzes existing research articles through library-based research to evaluate the efficacy of genetic testing, particularly for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, in identifying high-risk individuals. The findings indicate that genetic testing plays a critical role in early cancer detection, enabling targeted preventive measures such as enhanced screening and prophylactic surgeries, which can significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer in women carrying these mutations. However, the review also highlights the psychological and emotional impacts of genetic testing, with many women experiencing heightened anxiety and stress following positive results. Ethical concerns, including genetic discrimination and the accessibility of testing, are also discussed as significant barriers to the widespread adoption of genetic testing. The study underscores the importance of genetic counseling in mitigating emotional distress and providing guidance for women considering preventive interventions. Moreover, this review identifies the need for improved accessibility and awareness of genetic testing, especially among underserved populations. The article concludes with recommendations for future research, emphasizing the need for longitudinal studies to assess the long-term benefits of genetic testing and its integration into comprehensive breast cancer prevention strategies.
