The tourist gaze: digital trust and territorial identity in low-attraction tourism regions

In an era defined by post-consumption tourism and declining attention spans, low-attraction regions face unique challenges in cultivating visibility, trust, and territorial identity. This article explores how digital and architectural marketing strategies can reshape tourist perception and engagement in non-iconic destinations, using the Republic of Kalmykia as a case study. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of John Urry and Tim Ingold, the study reconceptualizes tourism as a form of perceptual participation rather than visual consumption. The analysis highlights how rhythmic branding, ecological design, and interface architecture can function as infrastructures of slow attention and spatial resonance. The findings emphasize that sustainable regional development requires not just promotion, but perceptual attunement — a form of digital trust built on coherence between narrative, environment, and interface. The article argues for a shift in tourism strategy from persuasion to hospitality, where architecture — both physical and digital — becomes the medium of territorial meaning
