Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Communication Strategies of SocialWorkers with Clients

Background: The objective of the empirical study is to analyse the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the communication strategies employed by social workers in their interactions with clients in social services. The research seeks to understand how the pandemic has influenced communication styles, challenges faced by social workers, and their coping mechanisms in the context of increased emotional and psychological demands. Methods: A qualitative research design was utilized. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 10 social workers working in social service organizations in the Bratislava region. The interviews were designed to explore the ways in which social workers adapted their communication approaches during the pandemic, including the use of emotional communication, empathy, and the management of client needs. Results: The study found that social workers had to significantly adapt their communication styles during the pandemic. Key changes included an increased use of empathetic and assertive communication to manage heightened client emotional needs. Social workers also reported a rise in communication with clients' families and an increased workload due to administrative tasks and the need for emotional support. However, challenges included stress and burnout due to administrative overload and reduced social contact with clients. Conclusion: The findings highlight the importance of adaptive communication strategies in maintaining effective social work practices during crises. Empathy, assertiveness, and proactive communication with clients' families were essential in addressing the challenges brought by the pandemic.
