Reading Habitually among Nigerian Students and Socio-economic Implications

There is a growing concerning issue about reading habitually among Nigerian students with significant socio-economic implications. Research suggests that the diminishing of a good number of students’ enthusiasm for education, which is a sinequa-non for human capital development has some factors attributed to it. This paper adopts Walberg’s (1981) theory of academic achievement as its framework of analysis. The paper observes that the lack of reading culture by most undergraduate students in Nigeria is caused by a lot of reasons, predominately, the impact of social media addiction. Added to the causal effect is the issue of “school na scam” ideology, mostly, championed by some groups of people who have taken to get-rich-quick syndrome, and who have no value for education hence they indoctrinate some gullible youths into their own pattern of life. The paper therefore recommends that there shall be a reorientation of youths on imbibing a sound reading culture/moral uprightness.
