Memristive Chaotic Circuit for Information Processing Through Time

Human brain processes sensory information in real‐time with an efficiency that far exceeds the capabilities of current artificial computing systems. It operates as a complex nonlinear system, composed of interacting dynamic units—neurons and synapses—which process data‐streams as time goes by, i.e., through time, using time as an internal variable. Herein, the memristor‐based compact chaotic circuit incorporated in a computing architecture is presented, able to process information through time. A memristive hardware version of the formally simplest chaotic circuit has been realized, which, thanks to the nonlinearity of the nonvolatile memristor device, exhibits complex dynamics in response to a driving signal. This circuit is employed in a single‐node reservoir computing scheme to showcase nonlinear classification tasks and the processing of data streams through time. These results demonstrate that a simple memristor‐based chaotic circuit has the potential to operate as a computing system based on nonlinear dynamics and to process temporal information through time.
