Enhanced Imaging of Walkaway VSP data for Complex Geological Structures using Horizon-Based Velocity Modelling

Summary This study showcases the application of vertical seismic profiling (VSP) data to generate high-resolution images of complex geological structures in the vicinity of a well. By leveraging seismic interpretation data, we developed a novel approach to build a horizon-based-velocity model, specifically designed to enhance the imaging of steeply dipping layers and the base of salt. The base of salt was previously unclear in existing surface seismic images. Our results demonstrate that combning this approach with traveltime tomography-based velocity model updates significantly improves the imaging of the base of salt, leading to a more comprehensive understanding of the subsurface geology. This enables optimizied decision-making for expolration activities in the area, highlighting the value of integrating advanced seismic techniques for improved subsurface characterization.
