Analyzing Welfare Technology Research Trends Based on NTIS Data
This study aims to define the concept and classification scope of welfare technology based on the National Standard Classification System for Science and Technology and prior research, and to analyze the current status and research trends of welfare technology R&D using NTIS data. The analysis targeted R&D projects applicable to both social welfare and healthcare services.Annual trends in R&D expenditures from 2016 to 2023 were reviewed, and network and CONCOR analyses were applied to major research keywords to identify semantic structures and technological clusters. Results show a steady increase in welfare technology investment, reflecting growing policy interest.Research trends were grouped into four categories: (1) AI-based precision digital healthcare, (2) social health management and aging society response, (3) neuro-and brain-based bio and diagnostic technologies, and (4) smart rehabilitation and medical robotics. These clusters demonstrate interdisciplinary convergence across healthcare, engineering, and welfare fields, addressing user needs and practical applications. The study points to an overemphasis on individual-level diagnostic and rehabilitative technologies and suggests a shift toward community-based integrated services. It also stresses the importance of incorporating social values-accessibility, equity, and inclusion-into future R&D.Establishing classification systems, data-driven platforms, and user-centered approaches is key to sustainable welfare technology innovation.
