A Study on the Literary Elements in Schumann’s Character Piece ⟪Papillons Op. 2⟫: Focusing on the Symbolism of Butterfly and Its Musical Expression
This study examined the literary elements in Robert Schumann's Papillons, Op. 2, focusing on the symbolic meaning of the title "butterfly" and its musical representation. In Jean Paul's novel, the butterfly symbolizes the Romantic poetic ideal and the utopian state achieved through growth and transformation.Schumann adopted this concept and expressed it musically in Papillons, Op. 2, where the butterfly was depicted as a vibrant, fluttering entity embodying an aspiration toward an ideal. The overall structure of the piece, spanning from the introduction to the twelfth piece, exhibited a progressive expansion in scale and tonal shifts, metaphorically portraying the metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a butterfly. The final section (Twelfth Piece) further reinforced this transformation through explicit musical elements. While each movement remained structurally independent, they were interconnected through shared tonalities, melodic motifs, and thematic material, unifying Papillons, Op. 2 into a cohesive work.Additionally, Schumann musically illustrated the butterfly's movement and visual imagery through ascending figures, register shifts, virtuosic passages, syncopations, dotted rhythms, and minor second intervallic motifs.By incorporating musical materials and structural and developmental elements, Schumann translated literary concepts into music. His Papillons, Op. 2 thus transcended mere emotional expression, integrating literature and philosophy to establish a uniquely original artistic vision.
